Southside constructed a new children’s home and new wing on the adult care Belhaven Group Home on the Holy Angels Campus. Holy Angels provides residential care to children and adults with varying degrees of mental retardation; many of which have severe medical problems. The new adult wing allows more residents to continue living on campus and the new children’s home allows the nonprofit organization to accept more residents. It took approximately seven years to get the projects through the process needed to obtain a certificate of need from the N.C. Division of Facility Services, which regulates the construction of new medical facilities. After that, there was another year of design and budget work as well as local and state approvals. MBAJ Architecture of Shelby who built the original
Belhaven Adult Group Home in 2002, has now designed the 20,000 SF addition. They did not want the building to have an institutional feel to it, but instead a
homelike feel.
