Southside was selected to build Elon College’s first Leed Certified Greek Housing project. The project consisted of five 5,000 SF buildings with first and second levels. Each house included a large meeting/entertainment room, a kitchen and bedrooms for twenty people. Designed by Pearce, Brinkley, Cease + Lee, this was Elon’s first time using LEED for the housing rating system. The project also received the Energy Star rating for housing. By receiving both the LEED and Energy Star Ratings, Elon expects to save on ongoing energy and maintenance expenses.
The project utilized an array of Green Products and Practices which included environmentally friendly finishes on both the interior and exterior of the buildings. Interior finishes included terrazzo flooring, quarter sawn Oak millwork and engineered wood flooring.
The landscaping system utilized drought resistant plantings and reclaimed rain water for irrigation. The hardscapes and roofing systems were light reflective to reduce heat gain, thus reducing cooling costs during the summer months.
